~Top climbers commence 58 day challenging expedition to clean Mt. Everest~

Kathmandu, Nepal: 11^th May, 2012 -Xpress Money, one of the fastest growing money transfer companies in the world, in conjunction with Asian Trekking (P) Ltd – a leading organizer of treks and expeditions in Nepal and Tibet, launched ‘Xpress Money Eco-Everest Expedition 2012’ a unique clean up expedition on Mount Everest or Sagarmatha- the world’s highest peak.

This year’s expedition would be led by Dawa Steven Sherpa, Managing Director, Asian Trekking, Nepal, and Apa Sherpa, the world record holder with 21 ascents to Mount Everest. The climatic changes has resulted in melting of the snow revealing the waste which has been hidden for decades including oxygen cylinders, tent and climbing equipment. The current expedition would focus to climb Mount Everest in an eco-sensitive manner and bring down waste from the peak. The expedition would use alternative energy solutions like the parabolic solar cookers, solar energies for lighting and the SteriPENs for water purification.

Every year the collected garbage is ferried down to the Base Camp where it is sorted into biodegradable waste which is handed over to the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC). The non-biodegradable garbage is brought down to Khumjung for further disposal and management.

Are you implying that the company plans to support the event in the years to come?
Yes of course. We have spoken to the expedition team here and we know the journey they have embarked on is genuine, worthwhile and very well-planned. Besides, the expedition consists of a team that is very experienced and the person who is leading the expedition (Apa Sherpa) has been to the Everest summit for a record 21 times. So we definitely intend to be a part of it in the future.

Let´s talk about the company now. How do you see remittance market in Nepal?
Nepal is one of the top 20 countries in terms of revenue generation for Xpress Money. The county receives remittances of $3.5 billion per year. KUWAIT CITY, April 29: Buffalo Café kick-started their season with a bang by trouncing Shake-Shack 90-39 while Chronos Mills also outscored the Knights as the UAE Exchange/Xpress Money PABAK 28th Conference tournament entered the second week Friday at the Kuwait Disabled Sports Club in Hawalli.
The seven-game schedule for the week-end ended with the following results: Open Kitchen 76 vs. Tisok 70; Cebu Gemini Cargo 80 vs. Pinoy Kuwait 62; Buffalo Café 90 vs. Shake-Shack 39; Batangs 103 vs. Marina Volts 99; Chronos Mills 73 vs. Knights 66; IMCO 79 vs. Toyota AlSayer 71; LDJ Club-X 94 vs. Flipside78.
Open Kitchen restaurant outclassed Tisok 76-70 to continue their winning run in the leaguers group they started last week after their narrow victory over Club-X. The Open Kitchen restaurateurs put up a brilliant performance to soften the tough Tisok squad in a dominating fashion, leaving no room for doubt as to who was the better team. They pulled off the victory with a combination of smothering defense and a well-oiled offense that left the Tisok boys seemingly dazed.

Although both squads applied tough defense, Open Kitchen did it with such telling effect that only two Tisok players managed to come up with double figures, leaving the latter’s marksmen no clear looks with their leech-like marking; and though the Tisoks succeeded in slowing down Nino Canlas, they had no solution against the deadly trio of Alvin Apalin, Marlon Batino and Joe Casuga who took turns tormenting them, raining points from virtually all angles.
Tisok however stayed on the heels of the restaurateurs with Arturo Magbanua the substitute offense player leading the charge to push them into a third quarter lead. Tisok were left floundering after their brief lead in the third quarter as the restaurateurs tightened the screws and breaking the game wide open with a blitz that sent them slightly ahead 72-69 with 4 minutes remaining on the clock. Open Kitchen continued piling on the pressure till the buzzer saved the Tisoks at 76-70 for Open Kitchen.
Apalin knocked in 19 markers to lead all scorers while Batino had 16, Casuga 11, De La Cruz 7, Canlas 6 and Tan 5 with the rest of the points spread among the team. Magbanua paced Tisok with 13 with Jayson Manalo chipping in 8.

Elsewhere in the Inter-Company group, Arnold Sison and Mike Servila showed their top pedigrees as they led the Cebu Gemini Cargo squad to shoot down the high-flying Pinoy Kuwait in the second game of the day. The two stalwarts guided their team past Pinoy Kuwait, with Sison quarterbacking the offense while also delivering clutch hits and perimeter threat Rich Beltran playing decoy to set up Joseph Vargas and Edward Vilarosa. Benjie Pascasio also led the Pinoys in defense that denied Gemini’s hit men from getting good looks at the basket.
With the slippery Beltran leading the offense, Gemini Cargo led in the early going, taking the first quarter 27-13 on the combined efforts of Jonas Espritu, Sison and Servilla. Pinoy Kuwait seemed to have lost momentum at that point, thus leaving the Gemini scorers to have a field day to the end. Sison led Gemini scorers in double figures with 24 points followed by Servilla with 14 with Beltran and Mallari lobbing in 9 apiece. Pascasio tallied 10 with Vargas adding 9 points for the losing Pinoy squad.

Also, in a battle of restaurants, Shake-Shack suffered another loss in addition to their opening day loss at the hands of Incape last week as Buffalo Café mercilessly drowned them 90-39. It was a one-sided affair that saw the Buffalos charge on their opponents to lob in the baskets at will to the end. Shake-Shack captain Jayson Manalo was the only member of the team left with a double digit score of 12 for his side. Bernie Ariola led Buffalo Café with 29, Melvin Icaro 21, Flaviano Ramirez 10, Jay-Pee Vilano 7 and Ronnie Cruz 6 points. Marlon Amalat added 8 points to Manalo’s 12 to paced Shake-Shack in their loss.
In another leaguers game, Batangs narrowly beat Marina Volts 103-99 to register their second consecutive win in the league so far. As both teams won their games last week, there was the determination on both sides to win this game to keep the momentum flowing. Despite fielding a full complement and enjoying a ceiling advantage with their twin towers in Ferdie Cruz and Marc Mariano and high-scoring Jun Ninon, Robert Lorenzo and Kim Poliquit didn’t always have their way against the plucky and smaller Marina Volts, who led them most of the way in the early going behind the derring-do of Jojo Obordo with help from Villareal, Balaquit and Ombra for a 34-32 first half lead.

Both squads finished the third quarter dead even at 43-43 before Batangs’ hulking Jaguar Rocreo started to assert himself in the paint, while Cruz and Mariano took care of the perimeter while clamping down of defense en route to a tight 103-99 win at the buzzer. Cruz led the way in scoring with 28 buckets while Mariano added 16, Ninon 12 and Kim 9 points. Obordo scored 24 with Villareal adding 15 points in Marina Volts squad’s losing cause.
The rampant Chronos Mills squad barely broke sweat in their win over the Knights in game five, breaking the game after 36-23 first half, into a 55-42 bubble in the third and turned on the heat further in the fourth en route to a one-sided 73-66 win. Two Chronos Mills delivered double figures with James Carillo making 28 and Jayson Santillan 13 points. Julfre Miles and Wilson Ramos shot 12 apiece for the Knights’ losing cause.

IMCO Engineers got double digit outputs from quarterbacks Don Marote and Marvin Vidal to lift them past Toyota AlSayer to book a good position in the Inter-Company group as both teams were playing their first games of the season so far. Marote and Vidal knocked in 15 and 14 apiece with Joey Lorilla hitting 8, Allan Yap and Dexter 6 points each. James Po and Choy Mico scored 14 and 13 points in a losing effort for Toyota.
The last game saw LDJ Club-X convincingly win their game against the Flipside squad. Club-X built an early 89-68 cushion after the first three quarters of play and spent the rest of the game warding off a furious fight-back by the Flipside. Club-X’s Allan Nunez, Aries Garcera and Dirk Basco led scoring in the first quarter, while Nico Legarde and Dindo Bernante took charge in the second to help build the 8-points cushion and the quartet combined to help hold off Flipside’s charge the rest of the way en route to the win. Nunez shot 28 with Garcera and Baco adding 18 and 11 apiece in Club-X’s victory. Flipside had two players in double figures with Romy Navarro Pacer making 21 and Jeff Diwa 19 points.

Film lovers in Abu Dhabi had a unique experience on 20^th April, 2012, when the four stalwarts of Indian cinema came together to discuss various aspects of world cinema in general and Indian cinema in particular. Dr. Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Mr. Gautam Ghose, Mr. Girish Kasarvalli and Dr. Jabbar Patel descended on the dais to throw light on aspects of  new age technology in film making, Indian cinema in the world, literature & cinema, art directing and more. Audience, who were equally active, had an enriching experience.

The seminar was part of the three-day Indian Film Festival in Abu Dhabi by Indian Film Society, supported by the Cultural Wing of Embassy of India and co-sponsored by UAE Exchange. The films, which included masterpieces by these experts and many short films in Arabic, were screened in the auditorium of Embassy of India.

At the seminar, held at India Social and Cultural Centre, the discussions were rich with insights and information from the masters themselves. Answering a question the master film maker Dr. Adoor Gopalakrishnan, who has directed many films, which won international acclaim, opined that adapting a story of a popular writer, to make a film, is always risky as viewers have high expectations from the film.

Mr. Girish Kasaravalli, the maker of Tabarana Kathe, amongst many other masterpieces, felt that technicians are as important as the actors and that a lion’s share of the success of the film should go to these unsung heroes.

Mr. Gautam Ghose, the maker of many award-winning films including Moner Manush, felt that the technology is a means to enhance a film’s stature and not the end. Hence the importance is to the substance over form.

Dr. Jabbar Patel, the man behind landmark films like Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar and many more, said that intelligent actors add a lot of value to the director’s vision and they must be given enough freedom to express themselves.

Audience, which included film enthusiasts, amateur film makers, musicians and the like, were lapping up every pearl of wisdom that the experts had to share.

Mr. Peter Scarlet, Executive Director of Abu Dhabi Film Festival and Ms. Marcelle Aleid, Deputy Director, Abu Dhabi Film Commission also shared their thoughts.

Newly Launched Indian Film Society UAE Announces Three-Day Indian Film Festival to Be Held in Abu Dhabi

03.05.2012 – The Indian Film Society of the United Arab Emirates (IFSUAE) announced last week that it will hold an inaugural Indian Film Festival in Abu Dhabi from April 19 to 21. The three-day event, supported by the Cultural Wing of the Embassy of India, Abu Dhabi, will include screenings of four independent Indian features. The festival will hold its screenings, along with a slate of other activities, at the Indian Embassy Auditorium.

The opening night presentation is a classic of Malayalam independent cinema, Rat Trap (Elippathayam, 1982), directed by Adoor Gopalakrishnan, who will be a guest on the evening. The festival will be inaugurated by H.E. Mr. Lokesh Mysore Kapanaiah, Indian Ambassador to the UAE. Peter Scarlet, Executive Director of the Abu Dhabi Film Festival, will participate in a panel discussion with Indian filmmaker guests on April 20.

The Indian Film Festival kickstarts the newly launched IFSUAE’s initiative to promote knowledge and enjoyment of Indian films among UAE residents of all cultures. In addition to an annual film festival, the not-for-profit, member-supported group – which is affiliated with the Abu Dhabi Film Commission and the Pune International Film Festival – will feature monthly screenings, lectures, discussion groups and workshops, along with education and outreach programs in area schools and universities. The organization will also provide support for local film festivals by hosting Indian films and filmmakers.

In his announcement of the society’s launch, Ambassador Lokesh said, “There are a lot of patrons for Indian arts and culture here [in the UAE]. Though many Bollywood films are shown here, there is not much activity in terms of showcasing our glorious past in the film industry.”

The four titles to be screened at next month’s first edition of the festival are a diverse selection of contemporary Indian films in four different languages from a group of veteran directors, all of whom are considered leaders of Indian regional and independent cinema. According to Shamnad Basheer, IFSUAE’s chairman, the films were selected because they fall outside commercial criteria and represent the best of Indian cinema. All four directors are scheduled to attend the screenings of their films as guests.

The acclaimed Rat Trap, a drama set in feudal Kerala, is one of the most beloved of Gopalakrishnan’s films. Over a long career, the Keralan director has been credited with revolutionizing Malayalam-language cinema and inspiring independent filmmakers all over India, becoming, according to Basheer, “arguably the true heir to Satyajit Ray.”

The award-winning Riding a Stallion Called Dream (Kanasemba Kudureyaneri, 2010) is a realistic Kannada-language story about a poor rural gravedigger and his wife, directed by Girish Kasaravalli, considered one of the pioneers of the New Indian Cinema of the 1970s. The Bengali-language Moner Manush, directed by Goutam Ghose, recounts the life of Fakir Lalan Shah, a 19th-century Bengali saint and mystic poet; the title role is played by Prosenjit, who starred in the ADFF 2010 selection Autograph. The festival concludes with the screening of another regional classic, the groundbreaking Umbartha (1982), directed by Jabbar Patel. The Marathi-language drama is the naturalistic tale of a wife at odds with her husband as well as the system in her efforts to run a home for abused women.

The four films screened at the festival are preceded by shorts from both Arab and Indian-expatriate UAE filmmakers, as part of the Indian Film Society’s desire to facilitate cultural dialogue. Among the shorts is local director Majid Al Ansari’s debut The Intruder, a science-fiction film that has screened at a number of international venues since its premiere at the Dubai International Film Festival in December.
